Development of a cost effective submersible fish cage system

To ensure growth and innovation in the Aquaculture market the industry needs to develop new and cost effective production methods improving current method and inventing new ones. The main challenges facing the European aquaculture industry is competition for space, harmful algae blooms, eutrophication, escapees, alien species and GMO’s.

Aquaculture constitutes 27 % of the value of the fisheries (total € 2.500 million Euro per year) in EU. In the last decade the annual growth rage of EU aquaculture has been slower than the world average.

The idea of Subfishcage is to develop a cost-effective submersible fish cage suitable for open waters and unsheltered coastal areas. By submersion technology, the SubFishCage system to be developed, will be able exploit open waters and unsheltered coastal areas avoiding threats in the surface layer of the water such as bad weather conditions with high waves and ice floe (in Northern waters) which can cause damage to the installations causing escapees and alien species and GMO. Submersion will make it possible to avoid the negative effects of algae and jellyfish invasions, which occur in the surface water layer. Moving offshore will reduce the risk of negative effects of eutrophication.
